India stakeholder in peace in Pak-Afghan region: Manmohan
* Indian PM says New Delhi ‘intimately’ affected by developments in Pakistan, Afghanistan * Urges allies ‘to stay the course’ in Afghanistan
NEW DELHI: India has a vital stake in peace and stability in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday.
Addressing the 10th India-EU summit in New Delhi, Singh also said that India was “intimately” affected by developments in the region.
“We are in this region and what happens in Afghanistan, what happens in Pakistan affects us intimately,” AFP quoted him as saying.
He also urged the international community to “stay the course” in violence-wracked Afghanistan
“We appreciate the efforts of the international community to stabilise Afghanistan and it is our sincere hope that the international community will stay the course,” the Indian prime minister said.
He said Pakistan had not provided any input on David Coleman Headley, who was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for plotting a major attack in India allegedly at the behest of the militant group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.
Earlier in the day, Home Minister P Chidambaram had claimed that US security agencies had informed India that Pakistan had links with Lashkar-e-Tayabba’s terror plot recently busted in the US.
Chidambaram pointed out that Headley visiting Pakistan several times showed the country’s links with the aborted plot. iftikhar gilani/afp
