President wants more trade between Pakistan, BD
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan values its relations with Bangladesh and wishes to further strengthen and enhance cooperation in all fields, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Thursday.
Talking to outgoing Bangladesh High Commissioner Yasmeen Murshed, who called on him at the Presidency, he said political relations between the two countries needed to translate into substantive economic and trade linkages for mutual benefit.
He said the present trade volume of $411 million between the two counties was far below the true potential and urged to increase it to the benchmark of $1 billion.
The president appreciated the services rendered by Yasmeen Murshed for bringing the two countries closer and strengthening bilateral relations. The outgoing Bangladeshi high commissioner thanked the president for the support extended to her during her stay in Pakistan.
She also called on Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani at PM House and underlined the importance of cordial personal ties between the two prime ministers and hoped that both sides would further build the goodwill, APP reported.
Gilani said South Asian nations should jointly address issues of peace, security, poverty and hunger. He said Pakistan had always valued its relations with Bangladesh, which were based on mutual respect, common religion, history and culture. staff report/app
