Govt ready to disclose beneficiaries of loan waiver, NRO: Babar Awan

ISLAMABAD: The government is ready to table a list of all those who benefited from loan waivers in the past and those who benefited from the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan said on Thursday.

“We will have no hesitation in tabling the names of beneficiaries of loans write offs and the NRO. We are also ready to present the names of all those who got their cases withdrawn and gained political benefits under deals and went abroad,” Awan said in the National Assembly while replying to questions by Khawaja Asif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Nadeem Afzal Chan of the Pakistan People’s Party.

They also demanded that a committee be formed to investigate all these cases within a specified timeframe.

The demands were made during the question hour, when a question about the financial conditions of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited came under discussion.

Awan said, “A crime is a crime, whether committed today, yesterday or tomorrow … details of all those involved in plundering national wealth would be brought in the House … there should be an across-the-board accountability system without any discrimination.” Khawaja Asif had asked for a list of names of people whose loans were waived by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) during the Musharraf era. Nadeem Afzal Chan had demanded that the names of all those who got their loans written off in the past be tabled in the House. He asked the prime minister to form a committee to disclose the names of “corrupt people”.
