SAARC handicrafts exhibition opens
ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is taking concrete steps to promote traditional arts and handicrafts in the federal capital to reflect the soft image of the country, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi said here on Thursday. CDA chairman expressed these views while inaugurating the two-day Arts and Handicrafts Exhibition of the SAARC countries at the Arts and Crafts Village near Shakarparian. Artisans from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other South Asian countries are participating in the exhibition. Elahi said that CDA had constructed the Village over 26 acres of land at the cost of Rs 200 million. He hoped the Village would not only provide opportunities to the local artists to display their skills and but also serve as a hub of cultural activities for the whole South Asian Region. He said the main purpose behind the construction of the Village was to promote the indigenous handicrafts and strengthen inter-provincial harmony. He said the display also provided an exposure to the Pakistani artists to the outside world. He praised the skills of the craftsmen.
