Fazl says NRO to be opposed whenever tabled in parliament

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday said the party would oppose the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) whenever the government tabled it in parliament.
He was talking to reporters after a two-day consultative meeting of the party. Fazl said he had advised President Asif Ali Zardari before Ramazan against tabling the NRO in parliament. Opposing the military operation in South Waziristan, the JUI-F chief said the offensive was an open violation of a joint parliamentary resolution and a challenge for parliament, adding that Pakistan was not a war zone, therefore, his party did not support any fighting.
He observed that the military operation was not helpful in eliminating militancy, as it had only killed and displaced thousands of people. He reiterated his offer of mediation between the government and the Taliban.
Fazl said US drone attacks were being carried out with the consent of the government, adding that they were dangerous for the integrity and sovereignty of the country.
He said the US wanted to establish a “mini-pentagon” in Pakistan.
Commenting on US private security firm Blackwater, now known as Xe Worldwide, he said the US had rented 300 houses in Islamabad and 70 in Peshawar, and had acquired land in Quetta and Karachi as well, adding that the US wanted to take over Pakistan’s nuclear assets.
He demanded the government implement the resolutions of the parliamentary committee on national security and stop the military operations.
