Train tragedy

Investigation team to submit report soon

KARACHI: Pakistan Railways Chairman Samiul Haq Khilji has said on Wednesday that the investigation into the Allama Iqbal Express accident had started and that the investigation team would submit a report within two to three days.

He said this while talking to journalists at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, while visiting the injured passengers and distributing compensation cheques among at least 18 out of 45 victims.

He said that Pakistan Railways Inspector General had arrived in Karachi and started the investigation, adding that according to preliminary reports, the incident occurred due to the negligence of the train driver, as he did not stop the train despite the red signal. He dispelled the impression that train accidents usually occurred because the drivers did overtime duties due to shortage of drivers. He also said that the investigation team would record statements of railways’ employees and eyewitnesses, adding that the police was also investigating the incident.

He further said that the Pakistan Railways was taking different steps to improve its performance and services, including its signals system, adding that the investigation team would also enquire about the position of signals and railway tracks.

Responding to a question, he said that the Pakistan Railways was also planning to arrange a transport facility for sending back those passengers who fail to reach their destination because of the suspension of railway traffic. Regarding the complaints of passengers of Allama Iqbal Express, he said that the Railways police had been directed to give back their luggage at the earliest. staff report
