Security put on high alert to avert terror strikes

RAWALPINDI/islamabad: The twin cities city police and other law- enforcement agencies (LEAs) on Monday put security on high alert following the suicide bomb attack near Shalimar Hotel in the garrison city that claimed 35 lives.
Police sources told Daily Times that the LEAs had been asked to be extra vigilant to counter any further terrorist acts. They said security plan for public places and sensitive installations was being reconsidered. Restaurants, international banks and offices of multinational companies had been put under tight security.
The sources said special security measures had been taken at Benazir Bhutto International Airport. They said security officials would use sniffer dogs and metal detectors to clear sensitive installations.
They said army and police personnel had been asked to restrict their movements in the city, adding they should also try to hide their identity as much as possible.
They said sharpshooters had been deployed at rooftops of the important buildings to stop terrorists.
IGP, Islamabad, Kaleem Imam directed police to crack down on suspected people to prevent possible terrorist attacks.
SSP Tahir Alam Khan asked SPs of all circles along with SHOs of the city to ensure tight security in their respective areas.
He also directed them to ensure strict checking of vehicles at the city’s entry and exit points, and keep a tight watch on suspected people.
The SSP issued directions that owners of hotels, motels, guesthouses and inns keep the record of visitors and guests and examine their identity before allowing them to check in. He said such record should also be shared with the area police.
He asked house owners and property dealers to keep police informed about the particulars of tenants in their areas. He issued similar instructions to the dealers renting out vehicles.
He said security of all sensitive buildings had been tightened.
