COAS meets retired bureaucrats, military officials from SWA

PESHAWAR: A delegation of bureaucrats and military officials from South Waziristan, on Saturday, met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani to discuss Operation Rah-e-Nijat. One of the delegates said Kayani had invited retired and serving bureaucrats from the Mehsud tribe to discuss the military offensive in South Waziristan and the second phase of civilian control and the imminent return of the internally displaced persons to the region. “We all told the army chief that the operation should end only when all of the government’s goals have been achieved,” a delegate told Daily Times on condition of anonymity. He said the meeting was held in the General Headquarters on Saturday. Kayani told the delegates the army would continue its offensive until the terrorists were wiped out. He also said the military operation was not against the Mehsud tribesmen. According to the delegate, Kayani was told the tribesmen wanted “separate status” for the tribal areas and opposed a merger with NWFP. “Give FATA the same status as Gilgit-Baltistan,” the delegation told the COAS. iqbal khattak
