‘NFC Award of 1997 worst for Sindh’

KARACHI: Criticising the caretaker government of Mumtaz Bhutto in Sindh, the chief minister said that the NFC Award brought by the caretaker government was the worst possible decision for the province. “Sindh suffered a loss of Rs 88 billion due to 1997’s NFC Award,” he said. According to Shah, all the four provinces had suffered great financial losses due to this award because it had drastically curtailed the share of provinces in the Federal Divisible Pool, and increased the centre’s share. He said that the NFC Award given during PPP’s 1993 government, the provinces’ share was 80 percent and the centre’s share 20 percent. However, in 1997’s award the provinces share was fixed at 37.5 percent and the centre was given the remaining 62.5 percent share. He showed a copy of the 1997 award, carrying signatures of caretaker finance minister of Sindh Kunwar Idrees, and Nabi Bux Bhurgari, a close aide of then caretaker chief minister Mumtaz Bhutto. He also distributed copies of figures that showed year wise losses for Sindh. staff report
