India worries about diversion of US aid by Pakistan: Tharoor

NEW DELHI: India is concerned about Pakistan diverting aid and military equipment given to it by the United States, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said on Monday.
“We have actually applauded the US supporting Pakistan in its economic development and equipping Islamabad to overcome home-grown terrorism. But our bitter experience over the last 25 years, ever since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, has been that money is poured in from Washington into Islamabad, and a colossally high percentage of it is actually spent on purposes not intended by Washington,” he told CNN in an interview.
Tharoor said India wanted peace and good relations with Pakistan, adding every effort had always been initiated by New Delhi and thwarted by Islamabad.
Asking Pakistan not to fear strengthening Indo-US relations, Tharoor said New Delhi wanted Islamabad to benefit from its efforts for economic expansion.
“We believe that if India becomes a successful, prosperous economy, free of the fear of terrorist attacks, Pakistan will also benefit very much from being next door.”
