Wasim Akram’s wife laid to rest at DHA graveyard

Staff Report

LAHORE: Huma Wasim, the wife of former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram, was laid to rest at the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) graveyard here on Monday. Former Pakistan opening batsman Saeed Anwar led the funeral prayers that were attended by school friends of Wasim, former Test cricketers Inzamamul Haq, Mushtaq Ahmad, Ijaz Ahmad, Aamir Sohail, Moin Khan, Shafqat Rana, Zakir Khan, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials and sports journalists among hundreds of other people. Huma, 42, was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India, last Tuesday after her condition deteriorated on board an air ambulance flying from Lahore to Singapore, where she was due to be treated at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital. She developed heart and kidney complications and died on Sunday morning. Huma worked in Pakistan as a psychologist and a hypnotherapist. She also worked with the Pakistan team for a while as a psychological counselor. Wasim told reporters that he had lost a close companion and friend and it would be difficult to bear the loss of his wife. “I just hope I have the courage and fortitude to raise my two sons –Akbar and Taimur – properly,” he said.

Condolences: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani led the messages of condolence sent to Wasim. Pakistan captain Younis Khan his deputy Shahid Afridi, former captain Rashid Latif and former Test cricketer Jalauddin Monday expressed their heartfelt condolences over the death of Wasim’s wife. “We are all shocked with the death of Huma and pray to Allah Almighty to help Wasim and his family to bear this irreparable loss,” they said during a ceremony of Islamic Relief in Karachi. “We are all with Wasim and his family in this difficult time,” Rashid said. They said they would be visiting Lahore shortly to express their condolences. Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Qasim Zia and general secretary Mohammad Asif Bajwa have also condoled with Wasim. In a condolence message, they expressed sympathies with Wasim and prayed for the departed soul.
