‘Australian expertise needed’
Staff Report
LAHORE: The government needs expertise of Australian professionals to enhance agro-production in Punjab and boost its largely agrarian economy, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer said on Monday.
Talking to Australian High Commissioner Timothy Spencer George at the Governor’s House, he appreciated the Australian government for cooperating with Pakistan in different sectors such as education, agriculture and vocational training. He said such assistance would help develop strong ties with Australia. He said the universities of the two countries should work together to impart professional training to Pakistani students. He said the Australians were technologically advanced in mining— a field in which Pakistan has a lot of potential and where both the countries could work for mutual benefit. He said the Australian government should establish state-of-the-art mining laboratories in universities in Punjab.
The governor appreciated the AUSAID for Pakistani students, saying the step would further cement the bond between the two countries. He hailed the Australian government’s decision to release financial assistance for the internally displaced persons of Swat and Malakand. He said the Australian government’s proactive participation in the Friends of Democratic Pakistan reflected its desire to actively engage in Pakistan’s development.
