Government’s foreign policy ‘great victory’: Taseer

* Qureshi says govt will never compromise on country’s sovereignty

Staff Report

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on Saturday said the country’s foreign policy under the Pakistan People’s Party’s government was a “great victory”.

In a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who called on him at the Governor’s House, Taseer commended the Foreign Ministry’s efforts in portraying Pakistan’s positive image and strengthening the country’s relations with the world. He said the world was supporting Pakistan's stance on various issues.

"I congratulate the foreign minister and his team on achieving great successes on the diplomatic front under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani,” Taseer said.

No compromise: Qureshi said the government would never compromise on the country’s sovereignty. He said all apprehensions regarding the Kerry-Lugar legislation had been removed through an open house debate.

He said $7.5 million in assistance through the bill was not a loan but a grant, which would revolutionise the social sector in the country.

Later, Taseer hosted a reception for Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Khursheed Shah. Senior Punjab Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed, provincial ministers Haji Muhammad Ishaq, Dr Tanveerul Islam and other provincial assembly members.

The governor said the PPP government had taken all possible measures for improving the living standards of the working class. "We cannot ignore low income groups of the society," he added.
