Chemical drums explosion spreads panic in city

Staff Report

KARACHI: Fear and panic gripped the citizens of the city after they heard the news about an explosion in Saddar Town on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, it was not an act of terrorism, but an explosion in the chemical drums placed on the roof of the Risala police station, which was quickly disclosed to the media by the police officials.

All the things in the area were as per routine when suddenly at 2:00 pm people heard a loud explosion and they immediately feared that it was a bomb blast or suicidal attack and left their shops while those who were driving cars stopped on the roads to save themselves from any untoward tragedy.

It was learnt that the Risala police had dumped potassium chloride inside the police station for their personal purpose which exploded due to overheating. As a result, two policemen, namely Ghulam Yasin, 35, and Abdul Qadir sustained injuries and were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi where the doctors discharged them after providing medical treatment.

It should be noted here that Risala police station is situated at Nishtar road, Ranchore line area, which is also the biggest commercial hub of the city where thousands of people come for business purposes.

The police cordoned-off the area and called the bomb disposal squad as well as a large number of volunteers from different social and welfare associations had also reached the site. Soon after the incident, the officials concerned to the matter declared it that it was not a terrorist act but the blast occurred accidentally.

Police officials said that some four to five drums were dumped there. They said it was not a significant incident but owing to prevailing law and order situation and red alert declared in the province, the police took no chance for the safety of the people.
