UN mission remembers slain Pakistani commander
UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) held a memorial ceremony for Brigadier Moinuddin Ahmed who died in a terrorist attack in Islamabad on Thursday.
Brigadier Ahmed was serving as a deputy commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Sudan and was in Pakistan on leave.
The ceremony started with a silent salute from a contingent of UN troops from Rwanda, followed by the lowering of the UN flag to half-mast and a trumpet salute.
The participants observed a two-minute silence in memory of their colleague.
UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Sudan Ashraf Jehangir Qazi gave a short speech acknowledging Brigadier Ahmed’s contribution in peacekeeping and conveyed a message of condolence from Alain Leroy, the UN under secretary general for Peacekeeping Operations, to the family of the deceased and UNMIS staff. app
