18 killed in Mohmand mine blast

By Mukarram Khan

GHALANAI: An anti-tank mine planted on the side of a road killed 18 people of a wedding party and injured six others in the Baizai tehsil of Mohmand Agency on Friday.

The explosion, which occurred at 1:45pm, ripped through the minibus carrying the wedding party when it was passing through the Suran Darra Chowk, 40 kilometres northwest of Ghalanai, the agency’s headquarters. The Frontier Corps (FC), whose personnel have been fighting the Taliban, uses the road extensively, the AFP news agency reported.

Sources within the political administration said 15 people, including women and children, died in the explosion and six others were injured. However, FC sources claimed the death toll was 18 with six injured. Another senior administration official, Rasool Khan, said most of the dead were women and children. The injured were initially shifted to Ghalanai hospital but were later transferred to a Peshawar hospital for further treatment.

Separately, security forces are continuing the military operations in the Baizai and Safi tehsils. During the search operation on Thursday, security forces demolished several houses belonging to terrorists and fortified their positions in the area.
