DAP price for 50 kg bag falls by Rs 1,000

By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: The price of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) is over Rs 2000 per 50 kg bag while it was available at about Rs 3000/50 kg bag last year in the same period.

The wheat growers would be able to get some sort of relief over lower prices of DAP in the market while applying balance use of fertilizer. Through lower prices, the farmers would definitely apply balance use of fertilizer, which would help the government to achieve wheat production target of 25 million tonnes set for Rabbi season 2009-10, officials in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture told Daily Times here on Thursday.

The price of DAP in different cities was: Hyderabad Rs 2025/50 kg bag while last year it was Rs 3100/50 kg bag, in Sukkur Rs 2000/50 kg bag while last year it was Rs 3050 /50 kg bag. In Bahawalpur it was Rs 2050/50 kg bag while last year it was Rs 3100/50 kg bag, in Multan the price of DAP remained as Rs 2020/50 kg bag, which was Rs 3050 last year. In Faisalabad the DAP price is Rs 2050/50 kg bag while last year it was it was Rs 3200. In Lahore, the DAP price is Rs 2100/50 kg bag while last year it was Rs 3050. The price of DAP in Peshawar was recorded at Rs 1950/50 kg while last year it was Rs 2950.

Total requirement for DAP in the Rabbi season was estimated at 0.850 million tonnes. Total expected production in the country was 0.300 million tonnes and closing balance at the end of Kharif season 2009 was 0.314 million tonnes. Total expected imports of DAP in the season was 0.370 million tonnes which would make total availability of DAP 0.984 million tonnes in Rabbi Season 2009-10, which was more than the total requirements of 0.850 million tonnes.

Officials in the ministry also claimed that urea fertilizer in different markets of the country remained within Rs 750 per 50 kg to Rs 820 per 50 kg.

The official claimed that total requirements for urea fertilizer in the Rabbi season 2009-10 was 3.2 million tonnes and the expected local production was forecasted as 2.3 million tons. Closing balance at the end of Kharif season 2009 was 0.188 million tonnes, which made total availability of urea fertilizer in the country at 2.488 million tonnes. The officials also claimed that the government would import about 0.712 million tonnes during the season. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) would import urea fertilizer on fast track basis and it distribution would be made thorugh NFC/NFML. The TCP has accordingly floated tenders for import of 0.6 million tonnes of urea.
