Obama to host EU-US summit in November
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is likely to host a summit of European Union (EU) leaders to discuss the global economy and the situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran in early November, the White House said on Friday.
Obama would meet Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana on November 3.
White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said the session would build on the first EU-US summit under Obama’s presidency in Prague in April.
The leading powers are likely to convince Iran to renounce what the West says is the production of nuclear weapons.
On November 4, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would host summit meetings with EU leaders at the State Department.
“The EU and the US enjoy strong relations and [both the countries] promote peace, prosperity, and democratic freedoms across the globe,” the statement said. Sweden currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. afp
