India invites Pakistan for talks on Kishanganga
NEW DELHI: India has invited Pakistan for talks on the controversial Kishanganga Hydropower Project, being built on River Neelum in Indian-held Kashmir.
Pakistan has shown concerns over the design of the dam, calling it a violation of the Indus Basin Treaty. Pakistan has also said it would approach the World Bank for arbitration since India had failed to address Islamabad’s concerns.
A source said Indian Indus Water Commissioner G Ranganathan has invited his Pakistani counterpart Jamaat Ali Shah for talks on the issue. Ranganathan also urged Shah not to approach the WB, saying that the matter could be resolved bilaterally, the source said.
Pakistan has exclusive rights to the water of the three western rivers, namely Indus, Jhelum and Chenab under the treaty, while India retained rights to the three eastern rivers – Ravi, Beas and Satluj.
In June 2008, Shah had said Pakistan had the option of approaching the WB in case India continues to reject Pakistan’s stance under the treaty. app
