Governor announces Benazir Bhutto varsity
LAHORE: The government will establish a Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Women’s University in Punjab, Governor Salmaan Taseer said on Wednesday.
He was talking to HEC Chairman Dr Javed Leghari, who called on him at the Governor’s House on Wednesday.
“Benazir Bhutto University must come up to the international standards and play a role in the dissemination of knowledge in the country,” the governor said.
The governor asked the HEC chairman to enhance student enrolment in the universities to ensure that a knowledge-based economy is promoted. He also stressed the need for capacity-building of university teachers, adding that the HEC should focus on advanced sciences studies rather than the traditional studies offered in Punjab.
“The HEC must also pay close attention to strengthening campuses in cities like Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Multan, Bahawalnagar etc,” Taseer said. He said the HEC should learn from the experience of the Cuban scientists who have excelled in the field of Biotechnology. “I wish to revive the glorious past academic culture of Lahore during my term as the governor,” he added. app
