Airstrikes in South Waziristan, Bajaur kill 32 Taliban

* Taliban claim responsibility for Shangla suicide attack as death toll rises to 45
* Five Taliban killed in Swat operation

PESHAWAR: At least six Taliban were killed when fighter jets pounded the group’s positions in South Waziristan on Tuesday, said officials, as jets and helicopter gunships bombed Taliban hideouts and ground forces fired heavy artillery in Bajaur Agency, killing 26 Taliban and injuring dozens of others.

Fighter jets launched another round of airstrikes in South Waziristan on Tuesday, destroying around 15 houses in Makeen, Ladha and Barwand, said a local intelligence official.

No army spokesman was available to comment. However, the military said in a statement that “Taliban fired 31 rockets” at a security convoy in South Waziristan on Tuesday, wounding two soldiers.

Abdul Malik, a local government official, said the military strikes in Bajaur took place in Damadola and Sawai areas. He said he got the information on Taliban casualties from intelligence and military sources. A curfew is still imposed in Siddiqabad, Nawa Killi, Umeri and Inayat Qila.

Death toll: Separately, the death toll from a suicide bombing in Shangla district rose to 45 from 41 on Tuesday as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Two people died overnight and two more died this morning,” a doctor told AFP.

Five Taliban: In Swat, security forces said on Tuesday they had killed five more Taliban and arrested another five. At least 33 more Taliban also surrendered to security forces. agencies/staff report
