NFC should consider multiple criteria for award distribution

QUETTA: The National Finance Commission (NFC) Award should be distributed on the basis of area, poverty and backwardness of a province and not of population, Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Qaim Ali Shah said on Sunday. Talking to reporters at Quetta Airport, he said Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP wanted distribution of national resources on multiple criteria and opposed the distribution of the NFC award on the basis of population alone. The CM said nowhere in the world were national resources distributed on the basis of population. He said the government had received the people's mandate and had the power to announce a new NFC award distribution formula. app

Pakistan's role in fighting terrorism commendable

ISLAMABAD: The country's role in combating terrorism is laudable, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Secretary General Mushahid Hussain said on Sunday. He said this in a speech at the 'Asian Parliamentarians Leadership Conference on Peace', organised by the Universal Peace Federation. Referring to recent trends in Asia, Mushahid said both Pakistan and Sri Lanka had been successfully fighting terrorism and islamabad's support to Sri Lanka had been pivotal in this regard. He said 'the power of public opinion' had created a new environment for change in the region. Parliamentarians from eleven Asian countries including Nepal, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Cambodia and India attended the conference. app

Kashmir issue should be resolved through dialogue

ISLAMABAD: The Kashmir dispute should be resolved through dialogue, All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Sunday. Speaking at a seminar in Srinagar, he said the global situation had changed and the international community was keen on resolving all territorial disputes, including Kashmir. "During my visit to New York, I met with important personalities, especially those who have strong relations with the Indian government. They appreciated and supported the Kashmir cause and assured me that they will play their role in resolving the dispute," he said, adding the international community was putting up pressure on the Indian government to hold dialogue with Pakistan and the Kashmiri leaders. app

Handful of terrorists cannot destabilise Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A handful of terrorists cannot destabilise the country as the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) government is determined to wipe out militancy, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Sunday. Talking to a private TV channel, he said terrorism and extremism were the biggest threats the country was facing, however, the PPP-led coalition government was committed to fighting the menace. He said Pakistan was fighting the war against terrorism alone, adding the problem was not regional in scope anymore. He said extremism was a global threat and concerted efforts should be made by all stakeholders to address the issue. online
