Rawalpindi security up after Peshawar attack

* Additional bunkers placed at entry, exit points
* Security on the lookout for anyone disguised as policeman

By Aamir Yasin

RAWALPINDI: The city police and law enforcement agencies (LEAs) put security on high alert on Friday following the suicide bomb blast at Khybar Market in Peshawar that left at least 42 dead and about a hundred injured.

Police sources told Daily Times that the latest intelligence reports had revealed that terrorists could target the garrison city using public transport.

“Following intelligence reports and the suicide attack in Peshawar, additional bunkers have been placed at the main entry and exit points, sensitive police and army installations, mosques, Imam Bargahs and political parties’ offices,” they said.

They said traders and shopkeepers had been advised not to allow any unknown vehicle to be parked in front of shops for long hours. They said special arrangements had been made for policing of markets and shopping malls.

They said security officials deputed on Attock Check Post and Tarnol Check Post had been directed to check each and every vehicle coming from Peshawar and other parts of NWFP. They said suspicious vehicles and persons would not be allowed to enter Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The police had also been directed to closely monitor vehicles, especially public transport entering and leaving the city, they said. Plainclothes security personnel and sniffer dogs were patrolling sensitive areas, bus terminals, they said. Police commandos equipped with sophisticated weapons had been posted on important highways, they said.

They said the police had been directed to check record of local hotels and conduct body search of each and every visitor thorough metal detectors. The sources said scanning machines were being used to check handbags, mobile phones and other things before entrance to hotels.

They said police were advised to check suspected persons wearing police uniforms. Muhaffiz Force, Elite Force, Patrolling Force, Anti Terrorist Force, Rescue 15 and plainclothes security officials had been directed to remain vigilant against terrorists.
