Change in top CCP office surprises all
ISLAMABAD: The removal of Khalid Aziz Mirza from the office of chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) and the appointment of Javed Akhter in his place has come as a surprise to the authorities at the commission. Khalid Mirza recently criticised the government’s decision to set the price of sugar at Rs 45 a kilogramme under an agreement with sugar mills. He was also seeking the withdrawal of the agreement, citing reasons to highlight that it “violated” the competition policy and laws of the country. Mirza – in a recent landmark decision – imposed a fine of Rs 6.3 billion on 20 cement companies on charges of forming a cartel to increase cement prices under an illegal agreement. The removal of Mirza – an internationally renowned professional – has put a question mark over the implementation of the competition policy. staff report
