Solidarity day: Lawyers pass resolutions against PCO judges

KARACHI: All the major bar associations and representative organisations of lawyers of Sindh including the Karachi Bar Association (KBA), Hyderabad District Bar, Hyderabad High Court Bar, Tando Adam, Sanghar, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Naushehro Ferzo Thatta observed a solidarity day on Monday.

The meetings of the respective bar associations praised the judges for their “brave decision” of July 20, restoring the then non-functional Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The resolutions carried on the occasion praised the bench headed by Justice Khalil-ur-Rahman Ramday and said that the decision jolted the dictator in military fatigues to the hilt and sown the seed for democracy. The resolution also condemned the presence of judges who took oath under Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) and said that unless these are removed judiciary will not become independent. They have violated the order of a bench of apex court on Nov 2 that restrained judges from taking oath under PCO and thus be prosecuted and removed, the resolutions said. The KBA also held a marathon general body meeting, which was addressed by its president Muhammad Ali Abbasi, Honorary Secretary Naeem Qureshi and others. staff report
