Davis Cup: Czechs topple Argentina, Croatia down USA
PRAGUE: Czech Republic eliminated last year’s Davis Cup finalists Argentina at Ostrava on Sunday in a thrilling quarter-final. Radek Stepanek overcame Juan Monaco in straight sets in the final rubber, clinching a spot for the Czechs in the World Group semi-final. It was a disappointment for the Argentines who earlier saw the balance tip briefly in their favour. The Czech Republic last reached the Davis Cup semi-finals in 1996.
Croatia down USA
POREC: Croatia eliminated the United States from the Davis Cup after Marin Cilic beat James Blake for an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the quarter-finals. Cilic defeated Blake 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Sunday to help Croatia reach its first Davis Cup semifinals since winning the competition in 2005. Croatia will take on the Czech Republic at home in September. The Czechs beat Argentina 3-2 on Sunday. agencies
