Govt to spend Rs 940bn on construction of 25 dams

ISLAMABAD: To meet the ever-increasing demand for water and power, the Special Central Development Working Party (CDWP) is to take up 25 development projects related to construction of small and big dams on Monday (tomorrow).

The CDWP agenda also includes the Construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam worth Rs 850 billion including Rs 297.825 billion as Foreign Exchange Component (FEC). The government allocated Rs 15 billion in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2009-10.

Balochistan: According to the official agenda of Special CDWP obtained by Daily Times here on Saturday revealed that Balochistan has construction of 7 projects with a total cost of Rs 38.630 billion with Rs 98.527 million as FEC. The government earmarked Rs 860 million for these projects in the PSDP 2009-10.

These projects are Winder Dam project (Lasbela) worth Rs 2.535 billion, Hingol Dam Project- detail engineering design and tender documents (PC-II) Lasbela Rs 177.286 million, Hingol Dam Multipurpose Project (Lasbela) Rs 16.382 billion including Rs 81.960 million as FEC, Naulong Dam Project-detailed engineering design and tender documents PC-II (Jhal Magsi) Rs 185.960 million, Naulong Dam Project (Jhal Magsi) Rs 14.726 billion including Rs 16.567 million as FEC, Pelar Storage Dam, Awaran, Balochistan Rs 2.754 billion, and Garuk Storage Dam, Kharan Rs 1.868 billion.

NWFP: The Special CDWP agenda showed that the NWFP has 5 development projects relating to construction of dams with a total cost of Rs 24.093 billion with Rs 269 million as FEC. The government allocated Rs 900 million in PSDP 2009-10. The NWFP projects are construction of Mardan Khel Dam, District Karak Rs 230.162 million, construction of Ghol Banda Dam, district Karak Rs 279.431 million, detailed design of Sheikh Haider Zam and Chaoudwan Zam Dam project (PC-II) Rs 53.547 million, Bara Multipurpose Dam project, Khyber Agency Rs 20.651 billion including Rs 269 million as FEC, and Daraban Zam Dam project Rs 2.879 billion.

Sindh: The agenda further revealed that Sindh has 5 developmental projects worth Rs 21.603 billion including Rs 414.490 million as FEC and the government allocated Rs 500 million in PSDP 2009-10 for construction of these projects.

These projects are construction of Darawat (Baran) Dam on Nai Baran near Thano Bulla Khan in district Thatta/Dadu Rs 3.656 billion, consultancy services for survey investigations detailed design, tender documents and PC-is of 7 Dams in Kohistan Region, Sindh (PC-II) Rs 140.317 million, Nai Gaj Dam project, district Dadu Rs 17.807 billion including Rs 414.490 million as FEC, Khadeji Dam project. However, the agenda could not have the amount of total cost of Khadeji Dam and Sita Dam projects.

Punjab: Punjab province has 7 developmental projects with a total cost of Rs 5.732 billion with Rs 22.060 million as FEC and the government has allocated Rs 500 million in PSDP 2009-10.

Detail of these projects are construction of Papin Dam, district Rawalpindi Rs 1.167 billion, construction of Jamalwal Dam (Chakwal) Rs 289.301 million, construction of Lawa Dam (Chakwal) Rs 425.767 million, construction of Mohra Shera Dam project (Rawalpindi) Rs 556.331 million, construction of Mujahid Dam, Rawalpindi Rs 529.566 million, construction of Ghabir Dam Chakwal Rs 2.164 billion and construction of Kot Fateh Khan Dam, district Attock Rs 599.703 million with Rs 22.060 million as FEC.
