ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday warned terrorists and their supporters to lay down arms or face elimination, saying the war on terrorists would continue until the country was purged of the last of them.
“The war against terrorism is the war for Pakistan’s survival and will continue until the last militant is removed from the country. This is a war for the survival of our future generations and victory will be ours,” he said while addressing a gathering of federal ministers, parliamentarians, leaders and workers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to mark the slain Benazir Bhutto’s 56th birth anniversary.
Consequences: “This is my message to the militants, terrorists and their supporters to lay down their arms or face dire consequences, as the people of Pakistan have made this war their mission. These militants have not only defamed our religion but also posed a serious danger to the survival of the country,” he said.
“They (militants) have destroyed the shrines of saints and killed innocent people, including women and children, and brought a reign of terror to the once serene and peaceful valley of Swat,” the prime minister said.
Gilani said his government had never compromised on national security in the past and would not compromise in the future as well. “We have decided to eliminate terrorism and the nation is united in backing the military in this war,” he said.
Gilani also vowed to continue Benazir’s mission of attaining democratic reforms.
At the end of the proceedings, Gilani unveiled a plaque for a monument to be built in Rawalpindi in memory of Benazir Bhutto.
