Suicide bomber attacks Khomeini shrine in Iran

TEHRAN: A suicide bomber blew himself up on Saturday at the mausoleum of the father of Iran’s Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as unrest continued in defiance of a ban on demonstrations.

The attack on the mausoleum is likely to inflame passions among Iranians who revere the man behind the movement that overthrew the Western-backed Shah in 1979. It was not clear who carried out the bombing, confirmed by police; but authorities could cite the incident to justify a crackdown. The bomber was killed and three pilgrims were wounded, according to Press TV.

Elsewhere in Tehran, Iranian riot police used teargas to disperse demonstrators protesting against the disputed presidential election, according to witnesses. reuters
