Holbrooke sees ‘turning of corner’ in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: US special envoy Richard Holbrooke rejected on Friday the idea of a US military incursion into Pakistan, and acknowledged – according to the APP news agency – that the Pakistani armed forces have “turned the corner” in the ongoing military offensive and successfully cleared several areas. Addressing the media at the end of his three-day visit to Pakistan, Holbrooke said Pakistani people and the army were solely responsible for dealing with security matters on their soil. “It (the US Army) will not cross the red line,” said Holbrooke. APP quoted him as saying that he had seen “seriousness and dedication in the Pakistan Army for this military operation”. About drone attacks in the Tribal Areas, the special envoy said that none of the Pakistani officials took up the issue with him. The envoy made it clear that US would stay ahead of the rest of the international community in helping Pakistan rehabilitate nearly 3 million internally displaced persons. Replying to a question, Holbrooke expressed concern over the possible spill over affect of America’s planned military surge in Afghanistan. sajjad malik
