Nizam-e-Adl enforced

PESHAWAR: NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani signed the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation on Wednesday, formally enforcing what some call sharia laws in Swat and five other northern districts. “Today, it is an historic day,” he told reporters after signing the law two days after President Asif Ali Zardari approved it following a nod from the National Assembly. NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti – who represents the liberal Awami National Party – appeared enraged at criticism coming from within the country and from European and the US governments. “This is our problem,” he said. “Islam is our religion and we are Muslims,” he said when asked to comment on the White House statement that the regulations were against the spirit of democracy and human rights. “The state is responding to the aspirations of the people,” the governor said. He also ruled out the possibility of action against the Taliban for destroying state property, including girls’ schools, saying it would be against local traditions. staff report
