PM restructures NCSW, Anis Haroon made chairwoman

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday reconstituted National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) and appointed Anis Haroon its chairwoman and Rashida Anwar vice chairwoman. Other NCSW members include Misbah Momin, Romana Tanvir and Khawar Mumtaz from, Charmeen Hidayatullah and Jamy Chandio from Sindh, Dr Fouzia Saeed and Mariana Babar from NWFP, Rakhshanda Ahmad Ali from Balochistan, Ali Begum from FATA, Ratna Chawla from religious minorities, Bushra Ali Zulqamin from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Noorul Ain from Northern Areas.
The Law and Justice, Foreign Affairs and Interior secretaries and the Women Development Ministry’s director general will be ex-officio members of the commission, an official press release said. The release said the NCSW would review the government’s policy, programmes and other steps for the development of women in the country. It said the commission’s main objective was emancipation of women, equalisation of opportunities, improvement of socio-economic conditions amongst women, and elimination of all forms of gender discriminations prevalent in the country. It said the commission would examine all policies, laws, rules and regulations affecting the status and rights of women, and gender equality in accordance with the constitution. It said the NCSW would provide inputs for policy formulators and decision-makers to achieve the objective of gender equality in the society.
