With the exception of Moenjodaro

Sindh govt given control of 129 historical sites

Staff Report

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Sassui Palejo said on Thursday that the federal government has transferred administrative control of around 129 protected archeological sites in Sindh to the provincial government and an official notification has been issued in this regard.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Sindh Secretariat, the minister told the media that there are a total of 130 historical sites named in the federal government’s list, of which, 129 have been transferred to the provincial government, on the directives of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

According to Palejo, only Moenjodaro has not been transferred to the provincial government, although, the Sindh government is demanding the handover of that site too.

Answering a question, she said that the supervision of archeological sites was a provincial subject and the archeology department would have been transferred to the provinces if the concurrent list was abolished. The minister said that there are many other historical sites in the province that are not listed with the federal government.

Replying to another question, she said that the provincial government has sought Rs 2 million for the digging and development of Lakhian Jo Daro. To another query, she stated that her department has received complaints about illegal encroachments at Lakhian Jo Daro, Miran Jo Qubo and Chowkandi Graveyard and steps are being taken regarding the matter.

Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, Culture and Tourism Secretary Shams Jafrani and DG Special Initiatives Dr Kalim Lashari were also present on the occasion.
