China welcomes engineer’s release

ISLAMABAD: China on Sunday welcomed the release of an abducted national from the captivity of the Taliban, a statement issued by the Chinese embassy said on Sunday. Long Xiaowei, an engineer, was held captive by the Taliban in Swat for nearly six months. The embassy also thanked the government of Pakistan for its efforts for the release. “The embassy along with Mr Long wishes to express sincere thanks to the efforts by relative departments of Pakistan for his safe release,” it said. It said the engineer was released on February 14 and had safely arrived at the embassy. He would soon return to China. Long Xiaowei had been freed as a ‘goodwill gesture’ to the Chinese people, Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said. “He has been released. He’s fine,” Reuters reported Khan as saying. staff report/reuters
