PU History Department organises seminar on US presidential elections

* PU Hailey College of Commerce organises orientation ceremony
* VC commends principal for maintaining discipline at college
* Principal says active involvement of parents required

LAHORE: The Punjab University (PU) History Department has organised a seminar on the “Presidential Elections in the United States (US): Implications for South Asia” in collaboration with the Pakistan Study Centre (PSC) today (Thursday) at 11am in the PU History Department auditorium. Renowned US scholar of Asia, Europe, Middle East and South Asian Studies Professor Hafeez Malik of the Villanova University (Pennsylvania) will be the key speaker and will deliver a series of lectures on the United States, the Muslim world and the changing politics in the Middle East on the occasion. History Department Chairman Professor Dr Qalb-i-Abid will also deliver lecture on ‘The New Man in the White House’ and ‘The Re-orientation of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy’.

Orientation: Separately, the PU Hailey College of Commerce organised an orientation ceremony for its new students and parents on Wednesday.

According to a press release issued by the PU, parents had been invited to the orientation for the first time in the PU’s history. PU Principal Professor Dr Liaqat Ali, who strongly encourages the active involvement of parents in their children’s professional lives, had invited them.

Discipline: Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran said that there had been a lack of discipline at the Hailey College in the past, adding that Liaqat had ensured disciplined students within two months. He urged the students to follow the rules and regulations and complete their work on time. He urged the new students to take full advantage of their abilities by directing themselves to a path which would lead to the creation of knowledge. The VC said that this would only be possible if the students were able to complete their assignments within the given deadlines.

Parents: Speaking on the occasion, the principal said that nobody would be allowed to enter the college without their student identity cards, adding that this was just one of the many security precautions being taken by the administration. He said that since education had been becoming more common, the proper training of children by their parents had been missing. He urged parents to provide time to their children by listening to their problems and by providing solutions to them.

Students performed several skits on social problems in the informal ceremony. The VC was the chief guest and Registrar Professor Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Professor Bashir Ahmad and several new students were present at the occasion with their parents. staff report
