No Pak-US agreement allows cross-border attacks: Malik
ISLAMABAD: There is no agreement between Pakistan and the United States that allows the foreign troops in Afghanistan to operate in Pakistani territory, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik said on Thursday.
He was talking to reporters after a meeting with Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s son Muhammad Ahmad and sister Dr Fozia Siddiqui and at the Ministry of Interior. “And we cannot even think of giving verbal permission to NATO forces to operate inside Pakistan,” he added. He said the government could not block supplies to the NATO-led security forces in Afghanistan because they are being made under the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement
Neither the government nor tribal elders had threatened to block supplies for the NATO-led forces, Malik said. He said the government would take every possible step to ensure the sovereignty of the country. “Diplomatic as well as other channels would be used so as to ensure the territorial sovereignty of the country,” he said.
Also on Thursday, Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar told reporters after a meeting with the Argentine ambassador that the US had violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and launched attacks in its territory despite promising it would not. According to Express News, he said Pakistan would protest against the attacks.
Earlier, Rehman Malik said the operation in the Tribal Areas would continue until “the presence of the last militant in the area”. He said the government would pay for the lawyers representing Dr Aafia Siddiqui and had sought details of the police report of her disappearance. staff report
