No female doctor, no medical facilities: Female inmates suffer at Adiala Jail

By Imran Asghar

RAWALPINDI: Absence of a lady doctor at Adiala Jail has compounded the problems of around 175 female inmates, including 12 foreigners, Daily Times learnt on Sunday.

According to jail sources, 84 inmates were convicted on different charges, while the remaining 91 were undertrials.

The 12 foreigners are facing charges of drug and human trafficking and overstay.

The sources said that the former Punjab government had posted a Lady Health Visitor (LHV) to the jail but she left the job after two months. They said majority of the inmates were facing gynecology complications, which they could not share with a male doctor.

They said the jail hospital had an X-ray room and a laboratory but there was no operator or a lab assistant to deal with the patients.

Pleading anonymity, an inmate said that the jail administration was clinically indifferent to their problems, and absence of a lady doctor at the jail was compounding their problems.

She complained of rude behavior of the male health staff towards female inmates and urged that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani take notice of the situation.

Another woman said that various inmates were facing serious gynecology problems but the health staff provided them with routine tablets like Disprin, Asprin, Paracetamol, Panadol, Flagyl etc.

A senor jail officer told Daily Times that the Senate Standing Committee on Jails was working on appointment of a permanent lady doctor to Adiala Jail.

He said vacancy for lady doctor had been advertised three times but no one applied for the job.
