Mortar shell kills 9 civilians in Bajaur

LAHORE: Nine civilians were killed when a mortar shell hit a house in the Khar area of Bajaur Agency, Dawn News reported on Saturday.

The incident occurred when security forces shelling militant hideouts accidentally hit the house. Witnesses said three children and two women of a family were killed in the attack.

The channel quoted official sources as saying that bodies of three security officials were also recovered from the area. There was no official word on the civilian casualties.

Angry tribesmen took to the street and staged a huge rally for the first time against the killing of civilians in the operation launched some 18 days ago. The operation has displaced over three hundred thousand people.

Speakers at the rally condemned the killing of innocent people in the operation and said that the people were being targeted despite assurance by the government that civilian population will not be hit. They said no attack was carried out on the forces in the town of Khar, but even then artillery shells were being fired. The Bajaur traders union has urged the government to halt the military operation and resolve the issue through a dialogue. daily times monitor/nni
