‘We’ll be on to the rulers if judges not restored’

Staff Report

KARACHI: The direction of the lawyers’ movement against former president Pervez Musharraf could turn towards the new rulers if the deposed judges are not restored by Thursday and the government will be held from Friday, warned Justice (retd) Rasheed A Razvi, president of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) Tuesday.
He was speaking at a general-body meeting held on the day declared Youm-e-Nijat (Day of Deliverance) and Youm-e-Tashakur (Day of Thanks) and congratulated the entire legal fraternity of Pakistan over the resignation.
He asked lawyers not to be swayed by any misgiving till the main objectives of the eighteen-month old struggle are achieved. “Our movement was for the rule of law, for an independent judiciary in Pakistan,” he said, adding that first step now shall be the restoration of the Judiciary to the pre-Nov 02 position according to the spirit of the Bhurban declaration, endorsed by the Islamabad declaration.
The Islamabad declaration of Aug 7 was unambiguous and by word “immediate” it was meant that the judges were to be restored without a delay of even a single day. The National Assembly was in session on Monday and lawyers expect a formal announcement from the prime minister.
The leaders of the coalition remained in session for more than five hours but their parleys remained inconclusive which is a matter of concern, said the SHCBA president. He emphasized that politicians shall not take credit for the resignation and the departure of the former dictator but acknowledge that it was due to the struggle by civil society, lawyers, the media.
