Protest for Dr Aafia in Karachi
Staff Report
KARACHI: Pasban Pakistan held a protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club Sunday in favor of Pakistani doctor Aafia Siddiqi who is under trial in the US for her alleged links to al Qaeda.
Scores of people chanted slogans against the US and Pakistani presidents and demanded her immediate release. “Musharraf should also face this charge during the impeachment,” an activist demanded. “Why did he hand over innocent Pakistani citizens to other countries? PP president Altaf Shakoor suggested that every individual of the Muslim Ummah should follow the steps of Muhammad Bin Qasim. He bitterly condemned the detention and torture of Siddiqui and demanded the government help release her. If there were any charges against Dr Aafia for her alleged involvement in any suspicious activities or links with al Qaeda then she should have faced a court of law here in her own country.”
They said that the US was also violating international justice and humanitarian laws for trying someone for a case that did not even occur in its jurisdiction. The protestors walked the short distance to Governor House to register their protest there as well before dispersing peacefully.
