Qadri family murders: Senate body recommends Jamrud APA’s suspension

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedures and Privileges on Friday recommended the immediate suspension of Jamrud’s assistant political agent (APA) for his failure to prevent the murders of four members of Senator Hafiz Abdul Malik Qadri’s family, and to respond professionally after the incident.

The committee met at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Tahir Hussain Mashhadi and took the decision following a motion moved by Qadri on June 10 this year regarding the failure of the APA to contact him after the murders.

Committee Chairman Senator Mashhadi rejected outright the report submitted by the Interior Ministry and ordered in future that such reports be comprehensive and detailed. Committee member and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Kamil Ali Agha also took strong exception to the report, terming it “an affront to the elected parliament and the committee”.

Committee Chairman Tahir Hussain Mashhadi claimed the APA had not only failed to take appropriate measures for ensuring the safety and security of the senator’s family but also demonstrated lack of professionalism after the incident.

The committee ordered the Ministry of Interior to oversee the matter and co-ordinate with the FATA Secretariat for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murders. It asked the Khyber political agent to co-ordinate with other government agencies over the issue.

The committee also ordered the States and Frontier Regions Division (SAFRON) and FATA secretary to monitor the situation and submit progress reports to Qadri ever two-three days.
