More rain likely today

Staff Report

KARACHI: The meteorological department has said that Shah Faisal Town, Karachi, received the most rain in Tuesday’s downpour and more is expected till Thursday evening.

According to data collected at the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Faisal base observatory, the town received 59 millimeters of rain, while 54 mm of rain were recorded at the Karachi airport, 50 mm at PAF Base Masroor and 33 mm in North Karachi, between 7:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

“It was not a record-breaking downpour but it can be safely categorized as a heavy monsoon shower. The weather system that has formed in the south east of the Karachi region still exists and the rain should continue till Thursday evening,” said Karachi Meteorological Department Director Tauseef Alam, adding that Thatta, Badin and other districts of Sindh will also receive showers along with Karachi. He stated that the rains would lead to a reduction in temperatures, bringing about the end of the heat wave persisting in lower Sindh.

“By Wednesday morning, 48.4 mm of rain had been recorded in Badin, 19 mm in Nawabshah and 11 mm were recorded in New Chhor. Thatta received around 50 mm of rain, 23 mm were recorded in Mirpurkhas, 22 mm in Sanghar and 9 mm were recorded in Hala. Hyderabad also received 6.6 mm of rain,” said Muhammad Riaz, a chief meteorologist of the Karachi region, forecasting the rains to continue for a few more days.

“The wind circulation that came with the new weather system formed in Gujarat attracted moisture from northern Pakistan, which has been lashed with monsoon rains over the past one week. This created a low pressure area over the coastal belt of Sindh, leading to the first proper showers of the monsoon in Sindh,” said Riaz.

APP adds: Water and sewerage pumping was affected due to power breakdowns, causing a short water supply and sewerage overflows in various parts of the city.

According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), pumping at North

East Karachi Old Pump stopped at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, which could have been restored at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday if the supply would not have disrupted again at 3:30 p.m, which caused North East Karachi, K-III Pumping House to remain suspended for three hours.

Due to the power suspension, pumping suffered at Dhabeji, Gharo, Hub Pumping House and Clifton Pumping Station (sewerage), Jamila Pumping Station (sewerage) and Treatment Plants 1,2 and 3, while areas near Metropole, PC, Sheraton and Marriott Hotels, Clifton, Bath Island, I.I. Chundrigar Road suffered due to a sewerage overflow.
