ADB sets September 15 deadline for REIP project completion
RAWALPINDI: Asian Development Bank (ADB) project review mission for Rawalpindi Environmental Improvement Project (REIP) has asked Project Management Unit (PMU) to award pending sub-projects and remove obstacles to early completion of ongoing projects.
It has also set September 15 deadline for land acquisition for the Rs 1.4 billion Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
This was disclosed during the 11th meeting of Project Implementation Review Committee (PIRC) of the STP here on Tuesday. City District Nazim Raja Javed Ikhlas chaired the meeting in which District Coordination Officer (DCO) Jamal Mustafa, Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Director General Makeen Shahbaz, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director Islamul Haq, REIP Project Director Aslam Ali Sabzwari and senior officials of city district government and RDA turned up. Officials told participants of the meeting that the ADB had issued directions for provision of compensation to the affected communities of the STP project by August 31. They said the STP would be established at 5,000 acres. They said 50 per cent of the required land had been acquired from three villages Gidhpur, Gorkhpur and Jabar Miana villages.
They said the total amount for land acquisition for STP was Rs 540 million. They said Rs 200 million had been provided to the affected people of Gidhpur, Gorkhpur and Jabar Miana villages. However, the land at Adiala village has yet to be acquired, they said.
The meeting was informed that the lists of affected people had been prepared and payment would be given to them end of next month.
The officials said that the DCO would meet the management of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Bahria Town for getting land within its colonies to lay the trunk sewer, which would transfer sewage from Moti Mehal to Adiala Sewage Treatment Plant. The meeting was informed that the ADB’s project review mission led by Dr Shakeel had recently visited the country and prepared a report. There followed a serious notice of slow pace of work on the project by the ADB during the last six to eight months. The WB asked the PMU to direct contractors to complete the work within the stipulated time. aamir yasin
