High energy cost forces millers to halve flour production
Staff Report
RAWALPINDI: The twin city millers have halved flour production due to rising cost to grind wheat.
All Pakistan Flourmills Association, Rawalpindi region, Chairman Abdur Rehman told Daily Times on Wednesday that flourmills of Islamabad and Rawalpindi used to produce 80,000 flour bags a day but the production had been cut by a half due to rising electricity and fuel prices.
He said that the millers had been suffering huge losses since May because they had to sell 20kg flour bag at the government fixed rate of Rs 365. He said that the government supplied wheat to flourmills at Rs 760 per 80 kg.
Habib Flourmill Manager Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal demanded that the government supply wheat to mills at subsidized rates in view of recent hike in fuel and electricity prices.
District Officer (Revenue) Chaudhry Habibullah said that the ex-mill price of 20kg flour bag was Rs 365 and its retail price was between Rs 375 and Rs 380.
He said that price control inspectors were regularly monitoring the sale of flour and fining profiteers.
Deputy Food Controller, Rawalpindi, Rohail Butt said that the office-bearers of APFA, Rawalpindi, had assured them of supplying 85,000 bags per day from Thursday, which would help overcome flour shortage in the city.
