JI protest Dutch film, Danish caricatures
KARACHI: Thousands of Pakistani women staged a protest on Saturday against a Dutch film said to insult Islam and to oppose the reprinting of blasphemous caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), witnesses said.
The film “Fitna”, released last month by Dutch MP Geert Wilders, allegedly sets verses of the Quran against a background of violent images of terrorist attacks.
Police said up to 4,000 women, mostly from the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), took part in the demonstration, expressing anger against the Internet release of Wilders’ film and the reprinting of the caricatures. The women shouted “death to Denmark and death to the Netherlands”, as they marched on a busy street.
The protesters pressured the government with a resolution to cease diplomatic ties with Denmark and the Netherlands and to expel their respective envoys. “We will defend the honour of our Prophet and our religion with our [own] lives,” they said.
Last month, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry summoned the Dutch ambassador and expressed resentment over Wilders’ film, which it claimed “deeply offended the sentiments of Muslims all over the world”. agencies
