LPG smuggling from Iran hurting local industry
ISLAMABAD: Continued smuggling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Iran is hurting the business of local industry, industry sources told Daily Times on Monday.
They said, “Local industry is being deprived of about 30 percent share of their business due to continued smuggling of LPG from Iran that is also depriving the national exchequer from billions of rupees in term of taxes.”
Unabated smuggling of LPG from Iran is creating major hurdle in development of market and is acting as a deterrent for further direct foreign investment in this sector. “Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) should also take steps to control LPG smuggling from Iran,” industry sources demanded.
The major challenges for new government are: the current energy crisis, the infuriating electricity and natural gas disruptions along with soaring fuel prices. This needs drastic and immediate measures to provide remedy to ailing consumers.
There is one quick solution that government can provide immediately, which is to promote use of LPG as an alternate energy source that is an efficient and clean burning fuel. LPG has the properties to cater the demands of energy consuming sectors and like catering, annealing, steam generation, singeing, furnaces, grain drying, poultry rearing and textile.
Sources claimed that currently the LPG marketing companies are facing problems due to discrimination regarding the incentives offered by government. zafar bhutta
