There were also prizes for schools and parks. Finally, there was a prize for nurseries.

Exotic plants and flowers found in the gardens included: cordyline australias, nephrolepis exaltata, bajazzo, amaryllis, gerberas, daylilies, roses and chrysanthemums. The flowers exhibited in the lawns included: petunia, lilies, marigold, Australian bulbs. There were also bulb flowers, such as narcissus hybrids, daffodils, tulips, hyacinth and Muscari (grape hyacinth).

Many scented, spring flowering plants were also included in the competition. They are: chamelaucium (wax flower), lily of the valley (convallaria), genista (florists’ broom), and lilac. Spring is also the blossoming season of the cherry blossom (prunus) and viburnum opulus (snowball tree).

McDonald’s was awarded the first prize for arranging a flower exhibition. Defence Public School won in the schools’ category.

Sonia Zafar, a resident of W-block, won first prize last year and came in second this time around. She said that she had a great love for nature and loved to compete in the competition every year.

Hamid Asadullah, a resident of F-block, got the third prize. He was satisfied with the decision and said that he would like to see the gardens that the judges graded better than his.

He said that he had received a shield and certificates and was happy that his yearlong efforts had not been in vain. He also said that there should also be prizes for gardeners because they contributed a lot to the beauty of the prize-winning gardens.

The panel of judges, on March 20, visited the houses that were registered for the competition. The panel included: Lt Col Sheharyar Saeed, Lt Col (r) Javed Iqbal, Lt Col (r) Ashfaq Amjad, Ahmed Jawad Iqbal and Ghulam Shabbir.
