US welcomes Mirza’s election as speaker

LAHORE: Welcoming Dr Fehmida Mirza’s election as first female speaker of the National Assembly, the US said on Wednesday her appointment was clear evidence that Pakistan is a sovereign, democratic country, according to Geo News. The channel quoted US State Department spokesman Tom Casey as saying Dr Mirza’s election indicated women played a vital role promoting democracy and resolution of problems in Pakistan. He said the US was ready to work with the new Pakistani parliament. He also said it was not clear whether US officials were the target of the blast at an Italian restaurant in Islamabad a few days ago. daily times monitor
