PPP dedicates Int’l Women’s Day and Year 2008 to Benazir

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party Women Wing (PPPWW) Sindh has marked International Women’s Day, March 8, in honour of the late Benazir Bhutto. It also said 2008 is “The Year of Benazir Bhutto”.

“As the only female leader of a political party and the first female Prime Minister of the Muslim world, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is the pride of Pakistan. Her struggle for the women of this nation was relentless and unceasing. We have been given the opportunity to honour our great leader and her inimitable sacrifices. It is with this thought that we dedicate International Women’s Day 2008 to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,” said PPPWW Sindh Information Secretary and MPA-elect Shazia Marri while addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club Friday.

Marri said that it was the PPP that established the first women police station, the first women’s bank, employed over 50,000 female health workers, appointed female judges to the High Court and designated female ambassadors to represent Pakistan in other countries. Inline with its deep-rooted commitment to women, the PPP is focused on women empowerment and gender equality.

“The PPP salutes the ceaseless struggles of mothers, daughters, wives and sisters all over the world, and assures them of its support to the cause of women,” said Marri, adding that PPP plans to enunciate a national policy for women, facilitating job creation and women participation in the economy. She said that the PPP plans on increasing the 10 percent affirmative action job quota for women, initiated by Benazir Bhutto, to 20 percent. Marri said that the PPP is pushing for effective legislation to enable legal ownership of assets and resources for women, facilitating their financial independence.

“Family courts have never been presided over by women judges. The PPP will appoint women to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. We will implement the right of maintenance and child custody as per the law and establish safe houses for women across the country,” said Marri, adding that the PPP remains committed to its Shaheed chairperson’s vision for women empowerment and gender equality in Pakistan. staff report
