RTO Karachi gets 100% e-filing of income tax returns

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Regional Tax Office (RTO), Karachi has received 100 percent e-filing of returns from corporate sector for 2007.

According to data obtained from FBR’s regional headquarter, about 5,063 corporate taxpayers are registered with the RTO Karachi and all of them have filed their income tax returns through FBR online service electronically till its deadline January 31, 2008.

The FBR extended the date of filing income tax returns twice for corporate taxpayers from December 31, 2007 to January 14, 2008 and January 31, 2008 as majority of the taxpayers could not submit their returns following the political and law and orders’ turbulence in the country.

RTO’s officials said that majority of taxpayers have understood the procedures of e-filling as they filled the forms without any complications, but some 374 returns were filed manually by corporate taxpayers due to mismatching of crucial sequence and tax numbers. Though they were later converted and filed through FBR’s e-portal making 100 percent e-filing.

They added that taxpayers’ confidences have boosted in FBR’s working environment and facilitation offered by the tax office, showing a healthy response by the corporate taxpayers of RTO Karachi.

Accordingly, a well-focused strategy was adopted to facilitate voluntary compliance by creating IT compatible environment and educating taxpayers, the official added.

The e-filing of income tax returns by the corporate sector was made mandatory through the Finance Act 2007 in order to promote voluntary compliance.

As far as the total amount of returns claimed is concerned, the data revealed a sharp decline of tax worth Rs 305.839 million this fiscal year as compared to Rs 1.982 billion during the same period last year.

Officials pointed out that the significant decline of taxes sum was produced as the FBR was not received a big tax total from an oil and gas exploration and production company, which was non-functional during the period.

Overall, the RTO Karachi witnessed 41 percent growth in the filing of income tax returns in its taxpayers’ group of corporate, association of persons, salary, non-salary taxpayers in 2007, on the other hand, it posted 64 percent decline in the payment of tax with returns in the same year.
